North West / Valtus Announce Comprehensive Imagery Plan for the Province of Alberta
North West Geomatics Ltd. today announced the formalization of their plan for the acquisition of high resolution imagery for the entire Province of Alberta. This plan supplements the efforts of North West over the past 14 years and will result in complete province-wide coverage of 40cm 4-band digital imagery. This decision results from detailed consultation with industry and government groups who have significant land-based activities and a strong need for current and accurate full coverage imagery.
In making the announcement, North West’s Vice President, Tim Crago, stated “We have a long history of investing in this critical data base and have made the decision to further this investment by firstly, completing our acquisition for the entire province and secondly, committing to a formal three year refresh cycle. We historically have maintained and distributed a current imagery data set for the high activity areas of the Province covering approximately two-thirds of Alberta. However our private and public customer base has confirmed their need for full provincial coverage and we will now respond to this need.”
North West began its Alberta program in 1998 and the data is now used daily by more than 5,000 users in over 400 companies and government organizations who operate on the land. Alberta’s world-class resource sector has been instrumental in securing the Province an enviable economic position. North West’s imagery data base plays an important role in both the operation of these land-based activities and the prudent environmental management of these activities. The leading edge acquisition technology of the Leica ADS80 digital sensor provides multiple products; i.e. high resolution orthophotos, stereo imagery ready for a softcopy environment and multi-spectral data that is being used in a number of GIS, automated and semi-automated downstream analysis tools. These tools allow for the creation of many important derivative data sets such as land activity mapping, vegetation inventories, water analysis and activity change detection. These base data are critical as the Province continues to support land-based activities in an environmentally responsible manner. “We are proud to be an Alberta-based technology company and to contribute in a small way to the success of the resource sector and the Province”, Crago continued.
The 2012 Program will commence in late spring and continue throughout the summer and early fall.
